The process of making high quality solid wood flooring involves several steps, from sourcing the timber to the final product. Here’s the overview of the ATH stringent manufacturing process:
Timber Selection: The process begins with selecting high-quality sawn timber suitable for flooring. Different species of wood are chosen based on their “grading rules” suitable for flooring. For example, Malaysia wood is graded based on Malaysia Grading Rules and American lumber is graded based on National Hardwood Lumber Association.Â
Air and Kiln Drying: The rough sawn planks are then transferred to our kiln department undergo a drying process to achieve (EMC) equilibrium moisture content. Sawn timber will first go for air dry or season for a period of 30 to 90 days depending on the timber species and dimension. Then kiln dry for 30 to 60 days to bring moisture content down to 12%-14% which suitable for Malaysia climate and relative humidity. Kiln drying helps stabilize the wood and minimize warping or shrinking after installation. Kiln drying kills insects, larvae, eggs, bugs and mold, making it highly resistance to fungal decay, thus highly increase the durability of our products. Kiln dried wood works, machines, glues and finishes better than green wood.Â
Milling and Profiling: After drying, the planks are milled to achieve consistent dimensions and smooth surfaces. The edges are precisely profiled based on their usage, such as tongue and groove for flooring or groove and groove for decking, which facilitate proper installation.
Quality Control: Throughout the manufacturing process, a highly stringent quality control measures are implemented to ensure that each plank meets ATH highest quality standards. This involves inspecting for defects, checking moisture content, and verifying dimensional and profile accuracy.
Packaging and Distribution: Once the solid wood flooring planks are manufactured and inspected, they will be bundled, wrapped and stored under a well-maintained and fully insured warehouse. During transportation time, they will be immaculately pack for protection.
